KAPstone House's Vision The vision of KAPstone House is to provide Joplin and the surrounding communities, a safe and understanding environment where grieving children and their families can obtain support from trained volunteer facilitators and other families in similar situations. We recognize and honor the unique experience of every family's journey toward healing. KAPstone House provides support groups, professional referrals and resources to assist grieving families.
Grief comes from many situations. It comes from a death as a result of an illness, unexpected accident, pregnancy loss, or by an experience related to a homicide or suicide; it comes from divorce and abandonment; or it comes from being in a traumatic situation where your life or the life of a loved one was in danger - just to name a few. No matter what the reason, these families call KAPstone House because they are in pain and are seeking support, guidance and community connection.
KAPstone House Website Serves: Children who have lost a parent through death, divorce, or abandonment. Children who have lost a sibling or other family member through death. Children with a parent or other family member facing imminent death. Parents and other family members: Spouse Loss Group Child Loss Group Sibling Loss Group Suicide Survivor Group General Loss Group Multiple Loss Group Miscarriage / Parenatal Loss Group (And other grieving situations)
Grief Support Groups: Over the past four years KAPstone House has provided support groups for individuals participate based on their age, type of loss, and unique circumstances related to the loss of a loved one. The therapeutic curriculum guided participants through discussions and activities that allow for peer support as well as individual healing. We hope to have some groups out in the community in the future.
Most families would participate two times per month for one to two years with support groups held in the evening. Adults could attend with or without children; however, all children would always be accompanied by an adult. There is no set fee to participate in support groups but donations are encouraged.
It is always important to remember that support groups are not therapy sessions. Therapy seeks to change behavior, belief or thought. Support groups are for open and honest expression; a place to help enhance coping skills and minimize feelings of isolation.

Grief Information KAPstone House was founded in 2004 on the belief that every child, teen and adult deserves the opportunity to grieve in a supportive and understanding environment. Our society often fails to understand or support the needs of children, teens, and adults in grief. The principles of KAPstone House are:
1. Grief is a natural reaction to loss of a loved one or situation for children and teens as well as adults.
2. Within each individual is the natural capacity to heal oneself.
3. The duration and intensity of grief are unique for each individual.
4. Caring and acceptance assist in the healing process.
